Hogwarts Castle Quilt Design - Vanishing Cabinet & Slytherin's Locket

Yippee!!! All of the blocks for my Castle Quilt have now been designed with the addition of these last two blocks, the Vanishing Cabinet and Slytherin's Locket.

Now I have LOTS of pattern finalizing to catch up on, then I can post them all on my web site.

But at least now I can start joining blocks together since the design is finally done!

I can finally visualize this quilt getting completed!

Draco Malfoy has finally fixed the Vanishing Cabinet.

I always pictured the "S" on Slytherin's Locket to be made of separate emeralds like this.

Harry Potter Lap Quilt

This is my first Harry Potter quilt. I decided to take the blocks that weren't going to make it into the new quilt layout and make a lap quilt. I can finally say I have a quilt done!

I was lucky to find a gold thread that matched the background fabric so well. You can't really tell in the photo, but the gold quilting thread matches the thin gold lines in the background fabric perfectly.

This is the front of the quilt.
It's approximately 3 feet wide by 4 feet long.

Thirteen for Harry

And this is the back. I found some Harry Potter owls fabrics and I just love it for this. And the gold quilting thread shows all the block designs on the back if you look closely.

Thirteen for Harry - Back

And here is the latest plan for my large Harry quilt. I'm still deciding if I'm going to do it with all original designs or not.

Harry Potter at Hogwarts - Quilt Plan

I've finished designing the text for "at Hogwarts" and just need to polish up the pattern. The "Harry Potter" text is the pattern I've already posted, but instead of 5" high x 17" wide, it's going to be enlarged to 10" high x 34" wide on this quilt. The "at Hogwarts" block will be the same size.

The re-designs for the Flying Car and Elder Wand are also done, and I just have to finalize those patterns as well. So they'll probably be up sometime next week, hopefully. I haven't put the re-designs into the quilt layout yet, it still has the older ones.

Seven Times Seven - Quilt Layout

I've been working on my "7 Times 7" quilt layout. I had to re-arrange some things due to a shortage of fabric for the background. I can't remember where or when I bought it. I like this revised version a lot better than the original one.

Seven Times Seven - Quilt Layout

I've created a paper-pieced pattern for the Harry Potter text at the top. That has over 190 pieces all together, but it's in 24 different sections. I wanted it to look like the title text on the US books. The design is done, but the pattern isn't formatted for printing yet. The same goes for Azkaban, and Hedwig, and the Sorting Hat (this is a larger version, minus the stool).

I also need to re-make my Buckbeak. Besides being the wrong colors, he also came out a tad small.

My sewn blocks that I plan to put in the quilt are in there as photos. Where I have a design, but haven't sewed the block yet, the design is in the spot. The rest just have text where I haven't designed the block I want yet.

I'm pretty sure that is the layout I'll use for my first Harry Potter quilt.

Harry Potter and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Still not satisfied with my quilt layout, here's another version. I'm pretty sure I'll eventually make a castle quilt, but first I want to make one that represents the entire story. I think when I make the castle quilt it will be a small lap quilt with random blocks, probably using the 1st or 2nd castle layout which I like better.

This layout will make a comforter for a twin bed.

I've used grayed out versions, or design images for blocks that I haven't made yet, but plan to use or remake. This is to give me a better idea of what it might look like. Where I don't have a photo yet, I had to use text.

I kept the idea of putting a border around each block matching the year that block represents in the book series.

New Harry Potter Quilt Layout

Harry Potter - Seven Times Seven

I wasn't sure about the castle layout, so I started a new one. This one has 7 blocks for each of the 7 books. Each book's blocks are surrounded by a color that corresponds to the color of the British CDs and books, arranged in a clockwise fashion.

I've put pictures of the finished blocks in corresponding spots and text for blocks I think I'd like to make.

Hogwarts Castle Layout Plan [v3] - Design

I needed more direction as to which blocks I want to make and how many, so I decided to revise the quilt layout. I'm hoping this will help me to get my thoughts organized.

The new layout measures 64 inches wide x 64 inches high. I'm guessing there might be more versions before I actually have a quilt! I popped in pics of my completed blocks to get an idea what it might look like, as well as painted in some background fabrics.

Harry - update for 5 inch square pattern

I've updated the 5 inch square Harry pattern to reflect changes to the scar (a smaller scar) and the wand (narrower at the tip that were suggested by jpyka2 at http://jpyka2.livejournal.com/ .

I think the changes are a real improvement. I didn't want to make the scar this tiny in the tall version, but it makes a lot of sense in the larger face. I also eliminated a few of the robe pieces that are no longer needed in a shorter version.

Harry Potter [v3-RH] - Design

I haven't resewed a square block for this pattern, I only fixed it in Paint Shop to match the updated pattern. But if I do make a Harry square, this is the one I'm going to use.

Harry in Hogwarts Doorway

After several difficulties, Harry is complete.

Harry (in Doorway) [v1-RH] - Design

My original design was a bit larger, but when I printed it, I forgot to check that scaling was turned off, and the pattern printed at 4 13/16" by 9 5/8" instead of 5" x 10". There was no light on Harry's wand in the pattern, and when tried to add the sewing lines to my printed pattern, I realized that the size was wrong. By then I had completed the sewing of the face and did not want to remake it, so I decided to fix it by adding more fabric to the side and top background pieces. Then I updated the pattern to make the pattern match my sewn Harry.

Next as I was finishing Harry I realized he was left-handed instead of right handed. It seems I reversed the pattern as well. Oh well, I'm left-handed so I've decided it's OK if the Harry on my quilt is too.

Harry Potter (in Doorway) [v1-LH] - Sewn By Owlsea

NOTE: The face pieces are so tiny that I had to use 1/8 inch seam allowances instead of 1/4 inch ones to keep it from getting too thick to sew through. This helped a LOT with the piecing, and made it possible to get lots of pieces in a tiny space. I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance to add a piece, and then trimmed the seam allowance to 1/8 inch with an Add-An-Eighth™ Ruler.

This pattern is for a RIGHT-HANDED Harry, since I figure that's what Harry is.

If someone wants the Left-Handed pattern, you can get it here.

In addition to the large Haryy, I thought I'd like to have a 5 inch block for a pillow or another quilt down the line, so I cropped the large design down into a square.

Harry [v2-RH] - Design

I cropped and reversed my sewn Harry to show what it might look like in fabric.
